Denzel and Margarita Had Two Little Lambs

Turns out, little lambs prefer sheep’s milk and hay to ivy.

This spring brings two woolly bundles to the Queens Zoo barnyard, the newest addition to the Suffolk sheep flock. The two lambs were February babies, a male and a female born to mothers Denzel and Margarita.

All legs, with floppy ears and waggly tails, the youngsters are doing well and gaining weight every day. Though still nursing, the little lambs enjoy a taste of “grown-up food” (that’s hay, not ivy), and are eagerly exploring the Farm. Denzel keeps a careful watch over her particularly playful baby, occasionally nudging him onto a bed of hay for naptime. The mellower female lamb clearly takes after her mother Margarita, known for her laid-back demeanor.

Suffolk sheep are domestic animals, originally bred in Suffolk, England. They are known for their dark faces and legs, and grayish-white wool coats. The zoo’s Suffolk sheep share their barnyard home with karakul, Jacob’s four-horned, St. Croix, and ramboulette sheep. Four lambs have been born on the Farm in the past three years.
