New Roost for Red-Tails

| It’s a sad story with a very happy ending. Red-tailed hawks Manipi and Seneca were found injured in two separate areas of New York State. Manipi, a male, fell from a nest in Prospect Park, and had an infected mouth. Seneca, a female, was found upstate with an eye injury, which could make hunting for food difficult. When the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) heard about these two birds, we stepped in to offer them a new home at Prospect Park Zoo. Now, these two magnificent raptors are on exhibit along the Discovery Trail. Though their injuries would make it impossible for them to survive in the wild, the two red-tails are quite active and can often be seen soaring to the tops of trees in their exhibit.
Red-tailed hawks are native to North America. They usually weigh between two and four pounds. As with most raptors, the female is nearly a third larger than the male and has a wingspan of about 56 inches. Wild red-tails have been known to nest and raise their young in the heart of Manhattan as well as in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park.
