Binoculars? Check. Pencil and notepad? Check, check. Ears, nose, and eyes? Check, check, check. Now you’re ready to embark on the Discovery Trail!
Your senses are your best tools on the Prospect Park Zoo’s winding planted pathway through an exciting range of animal habitats. Keep your eyes peeled for local wildlife visiting the lush gardens, marsh, and treetops. Look for a wild heron or bullfrogs in Discovery Marsh, where turtles and ducks also swim. Listen to the soft “woo-hoo” of our Australian black swans.
If you prefer to navigate the natural world by touch, the Discovery Trail provides many opportunities to learn firsthand how different animals make their homes. Curious children can take a seat in a giant duck nest, climb a spider web, try on a turtle’s shell for size, or pop their heads into an underground prairie dog burrow. Our scurrying, tumbling prairie dogs are likely to be as busy feeling their way around the dog-town as you! You’ll find them wrestling with their siblings, chasing each other around, or snacking on yams and corn.
The Discovery Trail is full of wildlife both familiar and new to young explorers. Along your path, you may hear the hooting of our great horned owl, Snickers, or the calls of our aviary birds. You’ll wend your way past a North American porcupine family and a pair of red pandas, native to the foothills of the Himalayas. Also hailing from North America are the Zoo’s river otters, Erin and Oogie. This dynamic duo romps in a marsh-like habitat, where they can cool off in a special pool with circulating water.

| Discovery Trail-blazers can also point their compasses Down Under and meet our Australian animals. Say ‘G’day’ to western gray kangaroos and wallabies and Big Bird’s wild kin—the emus.
Whether you prefer to explore with your hands or your eyes, your nose or your ears, the Discovery Trail promises lots of great sights and scents for adventurers young and old. So come out and play!
