Celebrate the Tisch Children’s Zoo’s Tenth Birthday

Happy Birthday, Children’s Zoo! This fall, join us to celebrate the tenth anniversary of this enchanted forest at the heart of the city.

The Wildlife Conservation Society opened the Tisch Children’s Zoo just a few steps away from the Central Park Zoo’s main gate on September 24, 1997. The exhibit was named in honor of its primary donors, philanthropists Laurence A. Tisch and Preston R. Tisch, and their families. In its first month, the children’s zoo drew 100,000 visitors. It has remained a beloved destination for young explorers ever since.

More than 3.6 million children and adults have strolled through Paul Manship’s Art Deco gate of dancing goats, up the sloping path, and through the hollowed-out oak trunk into this kid-size oasis. Here, goat and pigs, ducks and turtles, Dutch rabbits, Pacu fish, and other critters share a homey patch of New York wilderness. And the generations of young visitors who have gotten to know them over a handful of grain or an up-close encounter have become their greatest friends.
