Blue-Ribbon Ribbit: WCS Photo Wins Earth Day Contest

©WCS/J.Maher

A photo by Wildlife Conservation Society staff photographer Julie Larsen Maher took first place in the Environmental Protection Agency’s 2008 Photo Contest. Julie’s photo won the “Protecting the Environment” category; the other two categories judged were “Enjoying the Environment” and “Nature and Wildlife.” EPA announced its winners and finalists on Earth Day, and has posted them in an online gallery for all to view.

Julie’s photo depicts a windswept Bruce Foster, the WCS Collections Manager at Central Park Zoo, cupping a tiny frog, the critically endangered Wyoming toad. This species is thought to have gone extinct in the wild. Through a successful breeding program in New York, a small population of the toads now live outside of Laramie, Wyoming, a result of a joint reintroduction program lead by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and supported by zoos belonging to the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA).

Find out more about the Wildlife Conservation Society’s efforts to help save endangered frogs around the world by visiting Year of the Frog.
